How to Use This Ratio Calculator

This free Ratio Calculator has 4 modes to cover every ratio problem you'll encounter:

  • Simplify: Reduce A:B or A:B:C to lowest terms using GCD — works for decimals too
  • Solve/Scale: Find a missing value in A:B = C:? or ?:B = C:D proportions
  • Split Total: Divide any amount into parts by ratio — great for recipes, money, ingredients
  • To Percentage: Convert any ratio into percentage form with fraction equivalents

Simplify Ratio Formula (GCD Method)

Simplified Ratio = A÷GCD(A,B) : B÷GCD(A,B)
Example: 12:8 → GCD=4 → 3:2

Solve Missing Proportion

A:B = C:D → D = (B × C) ÷ A
Example: 3:4 = 9:? → D = (4×9)÷3 = 12

Split Total by Ratio

One Part = Total ÷ (A+B) → Part A = ratio_A × One Part
Example: $500 in 2:3 → One part=$100 → A=$200, B=$300

Real-World Ratio Examples

  • Recipe scaling: Recipe calls for flour:sugar = 3:1. Scale to 900g flour → sugar = 300g
  • Concrete mix: Cement:Sand:Gravel = 1:2:4 — classic 3-part ratio
  • Screen aspect ratio: 1920:1080 simplifies to 16:9
  • Map scale: 1:50000 means 1cm on map = 50000cm (500m) in reality
  • Paint mixing: Base:Tint = 4:1 — for every 4 parts base, 1 part tint

Simplify Ratio Calculator — How GCD Works

The simplify ratio calculator uses the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) — also called Greatest Common Factor (GCF) — to reduce ratios to their lowest terms. The Euclidean algorithm finds the GCD by repeatedly dividing until the remainder is zero. Both 2-part (A:B) and 3-part (A:B:C) ratios are supported, including decimal inputs.

Aspect Ratio Calculator

Use the Simplify mode to find any aspect ratio in lowest terms. Common examples:

  • 1920:1080 simplifies to 16:9 (standard HD/Full HD)
  • 2560:1440 simplifies to 16:9 (2K/QHD)
  • 3840:2160 simplifies to 16:9 (4K UHD)
  • 1024:768 simplifies to 4:3 (old standard)
  • 2:1 is already in lowest terms (cinematic ratio)

Ratio to Percentage Converter

Convert any ratio directly to percentage using Mode 4. This is useful for understanding what share of a total each part represents — perfect for budget splits, ingredient percentages, and data analysis. The tool also shows the equivalent fraction for each part.

When to Use Each Mode

  • Simplify: Reduce a ratio to its simplest form — aspect ratios, ingredient ratios, map scales
  • Solve / Scale: Find the missing value in a proportion — recipe scaling, map distances, model sizing
  • Split Total: Divide money, materials, or ingredients by ratio — profit sharing, concrete mixing, paint
  • To Percentage: Convert ratio parts to % — budget analysis, ingredient percentages, data charts
