Bacalaureat Formula & Calculation Method
The Romanian Bacalaureat average is calculated using the official formula established by the Ministry of Education (Ministerul Educatiei al Romaniei). Understanding this formula helps you plan your exam preparation effectively.
Official BAC Formula
Media BAC = (Nota E.a + Nota E.c + Nota E.d) ÷ 3
The result is truncated to exactly 2 decimal places — this means no rounding up or down. For example, if your raw average is 7.8666..., your official media is 7.86, not 7.87.
The Three Written Exams
| Exam Code | Subject | Real Profile | Uman Profile |
|---|---|---|---|
| E.a | Limba si Literatura Romana | Romanian Language | Romanian Language |
| E.c | Proba Obligatorie a Profilului | Matematica | Istorie |
| E.d | Proba la Alegere | Fizica / Chimie / Bio / Info | Geografie / Psihologie / etc. |
Passing Conditions
| Condition | Requirement | Result if Failed |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum grade per exam | At least 5.00 in each of E.a, E.c, E.d | Respins — even if average is above 6 |
| Minimum overall average | Media ≥ 6.00 | Respins — even if all grades are above 5 |
| Special exception | Media = 5.99 rounds to 6.00 | Promovat — only this one exception |
Why Truncation Instead of Rounding?
The official methodology uses truncation (Math.trunc), not standard rounding. This means a raw average of 5.766 becomes 5.76, not 5.77. Many online calculators get this wrong by using Math.floor or Math.round. Our calculator uses the exact truncation method specified in the official Ministry of Education methodology.

About the Romanian Bacalaureat Exam
The Bacalaureat (BAC) is Romania's national school-leaving examination, equivalent to the A-levels in the UK or the Abitur in Germany. It is taken at the end of high school (Liceu) and is required for university admission. The exam is administered by the Romanian Ministry of Education and is taken by students across all Romanian high schools every year, typically in June and July.
Who Takes the Bacalaureat?
The BAC is taken by students who have completed 12th grade (clasa a XII-a) in Romania. It is one of the most important academic milestones in Romanian education — passing the BAC is required to receive your high school diploma and to apply to universities in Romania and abroad.
Exam Structure
- E.a — Limba si Literatura Romana: All students must take the Romanian Language written exam regardless of their profile or specialization.
- E.b — Competente lingvistice: Foreign language competency assessment (not included in the final average calculation).
- E.c — Proba obligatorie a profilului: Mandatory subject based on profile — Mathematics for Real/Science students, History for Uman/Humanities students.
- E.d — Proba la alegere: An elective exam chosen from subjects relevant to the student's specialization — Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, Geography, Psychology, Logic, etc.
Tips to Improve Your BAC Grade
- Focus equally on all three written exams — a grade below 5 in any one subject means automatic failure regardless of your average.
- Practice with past exam papers (subiecte) from previous years, available on the Ministry of Education website.
- Pay attention to essay structure in the Romanian Language exam — graders reward clear argumentation and correct grammar.
- For Mathematics, memorize all required formulas and practice solving exercises under timed conditions.
- Use this calculator regularly as you receive mock exam grades to track your progress toward passing.
