Class Rank Percentile Formula
Percentile = (1 − Rank ÷ Class Size) × 100
Top Percent = (Rank ÷ Class Size) × 100
Top Percent = (Rank ÷ Class Size) × 100
Example: Rank 20 out of 200 students:
Percentile = (1 − 20/200) × 100 = 90th percentile
Top Percent = (20/200) × 100 = Top 10%
Top Percent = (20/200) × 100 = Top 10%
Percentile vs Top Percent — What's the Difference?
- Percentile (90th): You scored higher than 90% of your classmates
- Top Percent (10%): You are in the top 10% slice of your class
- They are related: Top 10% = 90th percentile. Top 25% = 75th percentile.
- Colleges and scholarships usually use top percent as their cutoff
Quartile and Decile Standing
- 1st Quartile (Top 25%): 75th percentile or above
- 2nd Quartile (25–50%): 50th–75th percentile
- 3rd Quartile (50–75%): 25th–50th percentile
- 4th Quartile (Bottom 25%): Below 25th percentile
- 1st Decile (Top 10%): 90th percentile or above
How Class Rank Affects College Admissions
- Top 1–5%: Ivy League, MIT, Stanford, Caltech strongly prefer this range
- Top 10%: Required for many competitive schools and merit scholarships
- Top 25%: Competitive at most selective universities
- Top 50%: Meets requirements for most state universities
